Krishnan Shakkottai is a former Investment professional turned counsel with strong experience in the energy sector across the EMEA and BRICS regions. His practice involves investor-state disputes, commercial arbitrations, securities litigations and white-collar crimes. He is a core member of Aarna Law’s Investor-State Disputes practice, where he currently represents a sovereign State in investment arbitration proceedings initiated by an Oil & Gas company and a global mining resources group seated in the Hague and Singapore respectively and brings a wealth of experience with matters pertaining to the issue of quantum and damages gained from his Investment roles in the United Kingdom and Netherlands.

Krishnan’s international arbitration experience includes a stint at the Energy Charter Secretariat, Brussels, where he was appointed as its Special Representative to the Republic of India, to negotiate with India on its participation as an Observer in an International process to revamp the Energy Charter Treaty (including its ISDS provisions). Further he has spent time as a trainee counsel at a leading boutique International Arbitration firm in Beirut, where he was focussed on international commercial arbitrations in the construction and real estate sectors under the institutional rules of ICC, LCIA, SIAC etc and also at the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA), a leading arbitral institution in the MENA region, where he handled disputes in the oil & gas sector.

Krishnan also has extensive experience in the capital markets and major international financial transactions, including private equity investments across Europe in the clean energy and green buildings sectors. In addition, Krishnan was at the forefront of the launch of the world’s first set of low-carbon investment funds, advising asset managers on fund strategy and financial and extra-financial analyses.

He holds a Masters in Finance and is a graduate of ILS Law College, Pune where he was awarded prizes for best academic performance in Public International Law, Company Law and Law of Contracts and is also a recipient of the ‘Honourable Mention Best Advocate’ at the FDI International Arbitration Moot held in London, ranked in the top 5 of over 150 oral advocates.
